Wallpapering Your Bathroom

Bathroom redecoration can often be quite an expensive project to undertake. The standard bathroom will usually have some sort of tile, panel and paint combination on the wall and floor, and changing these can be an expensive task.

Not many people consider using wallpaper in the bathroom because of the fear of it being ruined by the steam and eventually peeling off by itself.

Generally, wallpapering is a cheaper option than buying tiles and hiring a tiler, especially if you are a confident enough DIY-er to complete the task yourself.

Of course, you will definitely have this problem if you apply standard wallpaper to your bathroom walls as the room is naturally humid and normal wallpaper doesn't resist moisture and abrasion like a bathroom wallpaper will.

You need to choose a thick, vinyl-coated wallpaper specifically for a bathroom to avoid disaster.

Many people love to be expressive with their interior decor and reflect themselves onto the walls of their home.

The bathroom is a place that most home owners don't consider as a room for personalisation and they tend to stick with the traditional white porcelain bath, sink and toilet, lino flooring and either fully tiled or half tiled and half painted walls.

It's a great shame that one of the most important rooms in the house, which is used numerous times throughout the day, can be forgotten and cast aside without contemplation.

As with any other type of wallpaper, bathroom wallpaper comes in a whole range of colour, patterns and textures so you have complete creative control over your room, and it gives you the ability to manipulate the aesthetics of the bathroom and create a relaxing atmosphere every time you enter.

It also adds an element of sophistication to the room if done correctly and the colours compliment each other.

There are a few things to NOT do with wallpaper in the bathroom, however.

If you have a separate shower cubical, or even a shower unit as part of a bathtub, be very wary of putting wallpaper in or next to this, as water splashes and excess steam will severely reduce the life expectancy of the paper.

Also, refrain from putting wallpaper on the ceiling. Because heat (and steam) rises, a wallpapered ceiling wouldn't last very long - even gravity is against that idea.

A tip which will help your wallpaper last a bit longer is to give your finished job a coating or two of clear acrylic varnish. This will improve water resistance and you might even get about a decade from your wallpaper!
